The following information is the result of research I conducted
about
my grandmother, Rivka Frieda (Herszkowicz) Berenblut's
maternal family.
I started with my grandmother's parents, Miriam
(Mejzels)
and Shmuel Herszkowicz, who immigrated from Lodz, Poland to
Antwerp,
Belgium, in 1892.
We knew that Miriam's mother was Sara
(Sura
Ruchel), but that was all we knew.
During my visit to Antwerp (in January 1999) I visited the
cemetery in
Putte, Holland (where Antwerp's Jews are buried), and found Sara's
grave. I
also happened to come across another Mejzel's grave, then unfamiliar to
me. It
turned out to be the grave of Sara's Husband, Menachem Mendel Mejzel.
Using the newly discovered names of their (Sara and Menachem
Mendel)
fathers which I found on their headstones, and with the aid of Jewish Records Indexing Poland
I was
fortunate to be able to trace the entire family back to the early
1800's, which
appears further down on this page. No records were kept in Poland prior
to
1809.
I obtained many
birth, marriage and death
registrations of previously unknown members of our family, which
enabled me to
build the Family Tree. Next to each family member I marked it's source.

From all these registration certificates it became obvious that
the
family name is spelled many different ways: Majzel or Majzels,
Mejzel or
Mejzels and more.
There are two noteworthy items:
1. Our g-g-grandfather, Meszulam Mejzels, was married three
times:
The first two times he
married two
sisters, the third time with his niece, Hinda Beyla Mejzels.
2. His son, our g-grandfather, Menachem Mendel Mejzels, married
his
step-niece Sura Ruchel Mejzels.
These two points complicate the family relations within the
family.
